BROTHERS ATTEND "UNDER 55" GATHERING IN CALIFORNIA


At the “Under 55” gathering, Fr. Dave McGuigan, Bro. Reinaldo Berrios and Fr. John Thompson

Approximately 35 brothers attended the “Under 55” gathering Aug. 31 to Sept. 5 at the Vallombrosa Center in Menlo Park, Calif. To kick off the event, themed “Communities of Life and Energy,” Bro. Sean Downing and Frs. Joe Hartzler and Oscar Vasquez shared their vocation stories with the group. Other activities included small group sharing and reflection on being a Marianist, and larger group presentations and discussions regarding the future of the Province. Ideas discussed at the gathering will be shared with the Provincial Council and Chapter. The gathering was coordinated by the Province Continuing Formation Committee, including: Bros. Ed Violett (chair), Mike O’Grady and Sean Downing and Frs. Chris Conlon, Joe Hartzler, Joe Kozar and Oscar Vasquez.

Novitiate - Dayton

On Aug. 18, Aspirants Luis Gamboa and Tom Farnsworth made their commitment to the novitiate community in Dayton and Novices Roberto Rivera (Davao City, Philipines), Steve Paone (Findlay Street, Cincinnati) and Bob Jones (DeSales Crossings, Cincinnati) made their recommitments before beginning their second-year community assignments.

Aspirancy Program - San Antonio

On Aug. 22, Ken Barrett, Ray Dominguez and Brandon Alana-Maugaotega were accepted formally into the aspirancy program during Mass at the Casa María community in San Antonio. A fourth aspirant, Alan Smith, recently began his aspirancy in Dublin, Ireland.

Later that evening, Nicole Trahan began her two-year novitiate with the Marianist Sisters at the rite of novitiate reception at Our Lady of the Pillar convent. Congratulations to all!

FORMATION NEWS

Fr. John McEnhill (Cupertino, Calif.) has asked to step down from the position of national director of aspirancy for the Province, due to extensive travel. Fr. John brought great wisdom to the formation work and has been an anchor for everyone. The Province thanks him for his years of service. The Provincial Council has decided that the assistant for religious life will assume overall responsibility for the aspirancy program in the Province.

With the call of Bro. Ed Violett to service on the General Administration, the Provincial Council will appoint a new temporary professed coordinator. The Formation Advisory Council and the Provincial Council have begun a process of discernment for this position, which should be appointed in October. Until that time, temporary professed brothers who have questions should contact Bro. Mike O’Grady, assistant for religious life, at mogrady@sm-usa.org.

 

PROVINCIAL COUNCIL ISSUES UPDATE ON PROPERTIES


Provincial offices of former Cincinnati Province

The Provincial Council has issued a report about the decisions made regarding the four properties that housed the former Provincial administrations. Decisions were based on information and advice gathered by the Province Ad Hoc Committee and the reflections of the Provincial Chapter and Provincial Council on the needs of the Province. The Provincial Council thanks the members of the Ad Hoc Committee, Bros. Ed Brink, Robert Hoppe and Eugene Meyerpeter and Fr. Pat Tonry for their valuable advice, time and reflection. MARIANIST MISSION CALENDAR NOW AVAILABLE

The nature photography of Bro. John Lemker (novitiate, Dayton) is the featured art for this year’s Marianist Mission calendar. The 15-month, standard size wall calendar is part of the Mission’s direct mail fundraising program. Bro. John, whose photography has appeared in National Geographic and other national publications, is the first Marianist artist to be featured in the Mission calendar. During the academic convocation Aug. 21 at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Fr. Bernie Lee (W. Ligustrum Ave.), vice president for mission and identity, and Ruben Escobedo, chairman of the board of trustees, welcomed three Marianists beginning new ministries at the university: Bro. Dennis Bautista (Casa Maria), assistant professor of English Communications; Bro. Tom Heinle (Woodlawn Ave.), university ministry; and Sr. Gretchen Trautman (Our Lady of the Pillar convent), coordinator of the Marianist Leadership Program. Congratulations to all!

WHO'S DOING WHAT. . .

Fr. George Cerniglia, who completed his service as general assistant for religious life in July, will return to the United States and begin a yearlong sabbatical. Fr. George will join the Lindell Blvd. community in St. Louis. From Jan. 23 to May 4, 2007, Fr. George will reside at the Dominican Priory in Oakland, Calif., while attending a renewal program at the School of Applied Technology in Berkeley, Calif. Fr. At 82, Fr. Norbert Burns (Indiana Ave., Dayton) is the oldest faculty member among the University of Dayton’s 550 professors. This year marks Fr. Norbert’s 61st year in the classroom, and he points out that he has never missed a class! Congratulations, Fr. Norb!


Fr. George Abmayr (Marcella Road, Cleveland) celebrated his 50th jubilee of ordination and 60th jubilee of vows with family and friends at a Mass at St. Joseph Christian Life Center in Cleveland Aug. 20.

Fr. Jerry Chinchar (Stonemill Road, Dayton), University of Dayton campus minister for catechetical programs and priest-on-call, offers reflections on the “bread of life” in his Aug. 18 homily. Read the homily.


Bro. Bob Rapp (Uxpanapa, Mexico) reports that the Casa San Isidro school in La Chinantla, Mexico, has doubled its enrollment this year. He would like to express his gratitude to the summer volunteers who worked on the buildings and property at Casa San Isidro to make it look its best ever.

Sr. Leanne Jablonski, director of the Marianist Environmental Education Center in Dayton, received the Environmental Education Council of Ohio’s “President’s Award” at the 2006 EECO conference in Cleveland. Sr. Leanne also co-coordinated a symposium on “Linking Ecology and Environmental Justice” at the Ecological Society of America meeting in August. Congratulations to Sr. Leanne.


On behalf of the MLNNA and NACMS, Ray McCracken has developed a four-part study guide for lay Marianist communities called “In Alliance with Mary.” Read the guide.


Maureen O’Rourke, assistant coordinator for the Marianist Volunteer Program, has accepted a full-time position as coordinator of Marianist Activities and Scholarships in the Office of the Rector at the University of Dayton. The Province thanks Maureen for her tremendous help with MVP and wishes her the best in her new role.


LAY MARIANISTS GATHER FOR ASSEMBLY IN SAN ANTONIO

More than 100 lay Marianists attended the 7th Continental Assembly of the Marianist Lay Network of North America in San Antonio July 27 to July 30. The event featured two keynote speakers: Jacqueline Landry, president of the Academy of Holy Names and former Catholic chaplain at Harvard University; and Neomi DeAnda, lay Marianist and professor of religious studies at DePaul University. The gathering also included time for lay Marianists to discuss and reflect on MLNNA’s goals and priorities.

MLC REGIONAL COUNCIL MEETS IN AFRICA


Members of the new MLC Regional Council, Bro. Paul Kageche (SM liaison/advisor), Thomas Banda (temporalities), Lorna Mueni (international team representative), Mark Dziko (deputy president), Felistas Kyuli (president), Raphael Tembo (education), Michael Thuo Kariuki (member) and Dominic Kimangila (spirituality)

The Marianist Lay Communities of Eastern Africa held their second regional council meeting in Nkata Bay, Malawi, Aug. 15 to Aug. 18. Council members from Kenya, Malawi and Zambia evaluated the council’s first year and planned for the future. Among the council’s goals is the development of a recruitment and formation manual, increased collaboration with MLCs worldwide, better processes for managing finances and the organization of a regional convocation.

UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON. UD ranks first among all Catholic universities and third nationally for its renewal and revitalization efforts in the surrounding community, according to a newly released ranking compiled by the New England Board of Higher Education. Read more.


UD PRESIDENT’S CONTRACT RENEWED UD’s board of trustees has renewed UD President Dan Curran’s contract through 2012. Dan is the first lay president in the university’s 156-year history. Read more.


ST. MARY’S UNIVERSITY On. Aug. 26, more than 150 students gathered at the school’s “Continuing the Heritage” event to lend help to charitable organizations throughout San Antonio. The annual event celebrates the Marianist and Catholic heritage of public service.


ST. MARY’S PRESIDENT WINS AWARD St. Mary’s President Charles Cotrell was presented with the “Adolph Meyer Award” on Aug. 17 in recognition of his leadership in preparing men and women for medical sciences and other research health careers. Dr. Cotrell also deserves accolades for surpassing the school’s goal for incoming freshman this fall. St. Mary’s has enrolled 557 new freshmen and 141 transfer students.
