Classes began on the Vianney property in southwest St. Louis County (formerly the location of the Maryhurst Postulate) in September 1960 with an enrollment of 319 young men and a faculty of 13 Marianist religious (Bro. Kenneth Nesbitt, the founding principal) and two laypersons. Currently, Vianney has 720 male students, with 47 dedicated laypersons and three Marianists on staff.

The mission of Saint John Vianney High school is that all members of the school family wholeheartedly dedicate themselves to provide a quality education for the young men according to the Catholic and Marianist heritage, philosophy and spirit. Vianney emphasizes the Marianist expression of the teaching ministry of Jesus Christ, “Son of God become son of Mary for the salvation of all” while seeking to cooperate with Mary in her mission of bringing the fullness of Christ to all within a caring, family-like community. To this end, Vianney affirms the Characteristics of Marianist Education.

The Vianney community is very proud of its broad college preparatory curriculum designed to meet the needs of all its students. Vianney was awarded the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon in 1998 for its overall program, its intensive 4x4 block schedule, and the community’s commitment to service.

A unique program offered each summer at Vianney is the Vianney Scholars academy. The camp offers students an opportunity to attend a two-week program where they learn how to study a problem from the viewpoint of multiple disciplines. This year’s program is “Looking at the Past through the Eyes of the Present.” In keeping with the Marianist philosophy of education, students in the program participate in a day long social service project.

Vianney . . . Our Family is Building is the theme of the school’s current capital campaign. By daring to dream, the board and the Vianney community have given shape and form to a vision so that Vianney remains faithful to its mission and proud traditions. The money from the campaign will build new classrooms, science labs, library, atrium entrance, commons area and field house, as well as renovate existing classrooms and do site renovation. The dream will become a reality.

The Vianney community proclaims its Marianist mission, is proud of its history and is confident in the future. As a family, the school will continue its excellent pastoral program, service program and academic program for the benefit of all its students.

The following Marianists are in full or part-time ministry at St. John Vianney: Fr. Bob Osborne, president; Bro. Chester Burnog, Bro. Walter Ebbesmeyer, Bro. Len Rudy and Fr. Bill Wightman.
