  • Dear Friends,

Welcome to the first edition of Gifts and Tasks, the new email newsletter for the MLC Region of North America, Asia, Ireland and Australia. For us Marianists, "community is experienced as gift and task" (Being in Community, 1.5).

The goal of this newsletter is to share the diversity of gifts in our Region- cultural celebrations, meetings and gatherings, spiritual reflections, community events, and more. And, since a vital and life-giving aspect of our Marianist Lay Communities is to be in mission, the sharing of our projects and works can be a source of inspiration and support for us all.

May the joys of our many gifts lead us to work generously in our task of bringing Jesus into our world!

    Peace,

    Isabella R. Moyer
    MLC's Represented at International Congress
    Pontifical Pentecost

Anthony Garascia (President, International Organization of MLC), Lorna Mueni (Regional Responsible, Africa) and Ezequiel Reggiani (Regional Responsible, Latin America) will be attending the Second World Congress of Ecclesial Movements and New Communities from May 30th to June 2nd in Rome. The Congress will conclude with a celebration of Pentecost with Pope Benedict XVI. This is the first time that Marianist Lay Communities will be represented at such a gathering. We rejoice together in this good news, and offer prayers for our delegates. May the Holy Spirit flow freely as they gather, and may our dear Mother Mary open their minds and hearts to be ever open to the Spirit as she, herself, was.

Come to Cana: Many Stories, One Table, One Family The 7th MLNNA Continental Assembly St. Mary's University San Antonio, Texas Thursday, July 27 - Sunday, July 30, 2006

Come to Cana is an opportunity to reflect together on the meaning of community life and how Marianist Lay Communities can use their diverse gifts to grow in faith, spirituality, family spirit, and social concern.

"Go to Joseph" - A Resource for Individual or Communal Reflection

Brother Javier Anso, SM has written a prayerful reflection on St. Joseph as a timely model and patron for the Marianist Family in our world today. Included in his essay are beautiful images of the saint collected by Brother Javier in his many travels during his two terms with the General Administration in Rome.

French and Spanish versions of Brother Javier's article may be found at www.marianist.org under the SM link.

THE ANZAC DAY TRADITION By Julie Aherne (MLC National Responsible for Australia)

April 25th is Anzac Day in Australia, marking the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australia and New Zealand forces during the First World War. 'Anzac' stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and the soldiers in those forces quickly became known as Anzacs, and the pride and solidarity in that name endures to this day. Our youth, back-packers in their many hundred's, go to Gallipolli each year to commemorate the dead- aware that many were their own age at the time of the fighting.

We became the Nation of Australia on this day at the Anzac Cove, in Gallipoli. It is a true Australian culture celebrated by all. The commemorative services are held at dawn, the time of the original landing across the Nation. Later in the day ex-service men and women meet and join in marches through the major cities and many centers. Even the ex- service people from the countries they fought against, march side by side with each other.

'The bugle plays and then there is silence.' It is a day when Australians reflect on the many different meanings of War. In Melbourne, at the war memorial, we have an early morning service waiting in the dark for the dawn to arrive, standing around the eternal flame that never goes out. We gather with young children, youth, families, old diggers and ex-service men and women. It is a very moving commemorative service and a time for reflection and prayer.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old, age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.
