MERCY SIENA TRANSITION IN LEADERSHIP

Fr. Tom Schroer has been appointed the Marianist Religious Community Director for Mercy Siena in Dayton, Ohio effective Aug. 15, 2005. Besides serving our brothers at Mercy Siena, Fr. Tom will continue his ministry as supervisory psychologist in the Department of Pastoral Care and Counseling at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.

Ms. Judy Moehl has been appointed Medical Coordinator for our Marianist religious at Mercy Siena. She has already begun her service and will work with Tom to insure quality care for our brothers at Mercy Siena. Among her responsibilities for our brothers at Mercy Siena, Judy will assist in making arrangements for admission, work with the staff to evaluate appropriate level of care, provide individual assessment and ongoing counseling, accompany brothers to the emergency room and selected physician appointments, maintain basic medical files, and, with the religious director, maintain communication with the Provincial Council about the care of our brothers.

Judy and Tom will be assisted in the care of our brothers by the Mercy Siena support community on Old Dublin Court. In June, Fr. Don Cahill will join the Marianist religious support community and will become the chaplain for the Mercy Siena complex. Don is presently serving at Our Lady of the Pillar Parish in St. Louis, Mo. Fr. Bob Backherms and Bro. Nick Rufo will continue their work in the support community. Bro. Joe Mariscalco (Meyer Hall, Dayton) will also continue his service to the brothers.

The Provincial Council wants to thank all of our brothers at Mercy Siena for their willingness to serve in this important ministry to our brothers. It especially wants to thank Tom Schroer for his willingness to take up the directorship for the Marianist religious community, Bob Backherms for his willingness to serve as acting director until Tom is able to take up his responsibilities at Mercy Siena, Don Cahill for his willingness to serve at Mercy Siena as chaplain, and to Bro. Jim Vorndran for his outstanding service to our brothers as director of the Marianist Care Community during the past years, especially his supervision of the transfer of the community from the Franciscan at St. Leonard’s to Mercy Siena. Jim has been assigned to the Stonemill Marianist religious community in Dayton as he takes care of some medical concerns. He will join our Marianist religious community serving St. Anthony Parish in Wailuku, Maui, Hawai’I, in July 2005.
