Dear Friends,

As you will see below we have had a very busy spring here at Mary’s House.  The houses have been full with retreats of all kinds.  From widows and widowers to women to grammar schools and high schools, all participants find a place to call “home.”  And this weekend is no different as we welcome our families with young children for a special retreat just for them.

The Summer Family Retreats are coming along nicely and we anticipate all good things as we continue to prepare for the arrival of our families and volunteers.

Finally, NEW THIS YEAR, we will be offering A Retreat for Military Families.  This retreat will take place August 26th – 30th.  If you know any military families who might be interested please pass along the information for this retreat.  I have attached a flyer to this newsletter.

Widow-Widower Retreat Recap & Photos

~Submitted by Madge Hempsey

This year’s retreat theme was taken from the book

"The Tree that Survived Winter" and was just beautiful.  We had women and men who were both new to this journey, and those who have journeyed with us for 7 years now.

As a metaphor we began with a bare tree to explore ways in which, as the seasons of the year change, so too does our recovery.

In our grieving days one day it is spring or summer and the next we could be back in the winter of our grief.  As the seasons change, we get more and more used to the differences in our lives and learn to live in the moment rather than try to relive the past.  We ended our retreat by experiencing the planting of a heavenly bamboo tree in the garden here at the Marianist Family Retreat Center.

Women’s Spirituality Retreat #1

Recap & Photos

~Submitted by Erin Fucci

The theme for the first of 3 Women’s Spirituality Retreats was “Weaving Sabbath.”  We looked at our lives in the context of our families, outside relationships, culture and society and explored ways in which we are called by God to weave moments of Sabbath (rest) into our lives.  Special liturgies, Eucharist, and the sharing of our personal stories were all a part of this experience.  One of the many highlights was creating our own prayer shawls…the image of being wrapped in God’s love during our daily prayers is one that many women on the retreat related to in a real way.  To see photos from this retreat click here.

Easter Triduum Retreat Recap & Photos

This year over 50 people gathered to celebrate the liturgies of Holy Week together.  Beginning with a Seder Meal on Holy Thursday, the group formed a community for the remainder of the weekend.  Of course there was plenty for the children to do, including the famous Cape May Point Easter Egg Hunt!  To see photos from this retreat click here.

 Mother Seton Academy Retreat

“Go Make a Difference in God’s World” was the theme of our time together.  As the 8th grade class of Mother Seton Academy prepares to enter high school, we looked at ways that God calls us in our every day lives to make a difference in the world.

Mother Seton is a grammar school in Baltimore in which the Marianists participate.  This school is for inner-city children who may not otherwise be able to afford a Catholic education.

A highlight of our time together was an excursion on the Cape May Whale & Dolphin Watcher!    To see photos from this retreat click here.

May High School Teen Retreat

Recap & Photos

“We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty creator of heaven and earth…”  These words and the rest of the words of the Nicene Creed formed the foundation of this May’s retreat.  In a nutshell we looked at how our God calls us to live our faith every day.

Among many highlights from this retreat was a scavenger hunt based on the Creed.  It had our teens walking (and in some cases running) all over Cape May Point!

Marriage Moments and Parenting Pointers

Contributed by Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net

On Marriage…

If you’re too busy to pray, you’re too busy. Pick a specific and regular time each day to say a prayer for your spouse such as, “Dear God, bless _____ today.” It might be when you start the car, wash your hands, brush your teeth, etc. It’s short, doesn’t take any extra time, just extra awareness of your beloved and entrusting him or her to God’s care. This works for kids too.

On Parenting…

Are you as smart as your teen - about the internet and social networking? Even if you don't like to mess with computers, learn enough about the internet to guide your children and set boundaries. Insist that your teen "befriend" you and be a silent partner.

Blessings to All!
