PROVINCE HONORS JUBILARIANS AT MASS IN ST. LOUIS

Five Marianist jubilarians from the St. Louis area were honored on April 28 at a special Mass at Our Lady of the Pillar. A reception followed in the parish center. Honored were Bro. Kenneth Jung (70 years), Bro. Leonard Rudy (60 years), Bro. James Maus (50 years), Bro. Charles Johnson and Fr. Oscar Vasquez (25 years).

The St. Louis festivities are the first of five Province-sponsored jubilee celebrations scheduled in the coming months. Check upcoming issues of FamilyOnline for coverage of jubilee events in San Antonio, Honolulu, New York and Dayton.

CUH CELEBRATES LOCAL MARIANIST JUBILARIANS

On April 22, Chaminade University of Honolulu honored three local jubilarians: Bros. Jerry Bommer (60 years), Tom Spring (60 years) and Bob Maruyama (50 years). A special Mass was celebrated at the Mystical Rose Oratory followed by a reception in the adjacent garden. Congratulations and blessings to Bros. Jerry, Tom and Bob!

SEVEN BROTHERS PROFESS FIRST VOWS IN INDIA

Seven brothers professed their first vows in the Society of Mary at the Marianist Novitiate in Nirmal Deep, Ranchi, India on May 1: Albert Xalxo, Anup Khoya, Bineet Tirkey, Nabin Lugun, Pitrus Ekka, Shashi Tirkey and Showraiah Ravulapalli. Superior General Fr. Manuel Cortés presided at the Mass, which also served as a celebration of Fr. Manuel’s golden jubilee.

PERSONNEL UPDATES

Bro. Les Kaehler (Marianist Residence, San Antonio) has been appointed vice-rector of the Chaminade International Seminary in Rome, effective September 2012. Bro. Les is completing his term as director of the Marianist Residence Community in San Antonio. Prior to that assignment, Bro. Les served many years in education and formation ministry.
Fr. Tim Eden (Hale Malia, Hawai’i) will serve as chaplain at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, effective Aug. 6, 2012. He will be part of the pastoral team of university ministry. As an appointed faculty member, Fr. Tim also will teach a course in the theology department. Fr. Tim has served as assistant professor of education and theology at Chaminade University of Honolulu for the past 10 years, and has been the director of the Catholic School Leadership Program at Chaminade University since 2005.
Bro. Brian Halderman (Casa Maria, San Antonio) has been appointed aspirancy program formation director for the Province, mentoring candidates who are discerning Marianist religious life while they reside with the Casa Maria community on the campus of St. Mary’s University. Brian also will teach in the fall semester at the university. Brian finishes his term with university ministry as coordinator for social justice this month.

MARIANIST MISSION BLESSES RECOGNITION PATHWAY

Provincial Marty Solma blessed the Recognition Pathway at the grotto of the Immaculate Conception at Mount Saint John in Dayton on April 29. Composed of over 1,500 inscribed bricks, the pathway honors Chaminade Society donors, who give generously to the Marianists. A Eucharist of Thanksgiving was then held at the Bergamo Center followed by an afternoon reception.

LIFE LEADERS HOLD ANNUAL MEETING IN PHILADELPHIA

From April 20 – 21, the Marianist LIFE regional coordinators and advisory board members held their annual meeting at the Marianist Center in Philadelphia, where they also enjoyed a social and dinner with the Parrish Street Marianist community.

AHAVA LAY COMMUNITY COMPLETES PRAYER PILGRIMAGE AT UD

 
On April 29, the Ahava Lay Community completed a prayer pilgrimage at the University of Dayton, which ended at the Immaculate Conception Chapel. The community includes current students and graduates of UD. The members went through formation during the fall semester 2011 and made their public commitment in December 2011. CAPE MAY STAFF SPENDS DAY IN SERVICE TO HOMELESS

From April 21 – 22, the staff of Tecaboca in Mountain Home, Texas, attended a retreat, “The Virtues of Jesus.” The program was based on the books “Growing in the Virtues of Jesus” by Fr. Quentin Hakenewerth and “The Woman and the Way” by Fr. George Montague, who led the retreat with Melba Fisher.

On April 21, the Northeast Marianist Family Council met at St. Joseph’s Social Service Center and the Coalition to House the Homeless in Elizabeth, N.J. Council members worked to developed priorities for the coming year, including making peace and justice a key component of the council’s mission; fostering ongoing Marianist formation; connecting northeast communities with each other and the larger Marianist Family; enhancing collaboration between religious and lay communities; and addressing initiatives to sustain communities. Rudy Reyes Jr., president of the Marianist Lay Network of North America, joined the meeting via Skype.

CALLED TO BE A WITNESS OF SAINTS: BELIEVING IN THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS

Fr. Paul Landolfi, U.S. Province liaison to the Postulator General for Marianist Causes, shares his May update with FamilyOnline readers. “Though our ‘saints’ died or were martyred, they are now very much alive since they are with Jesus in glory. With them, the mystery of the Resurrection comes alive. No, you can’t see them, but you know they are close by. You can talk with them, chat about special incidents, ask them for guidance, and above all count on their intercession for special needs,” writes Fr. Paul. Read more.

WHO’S DOING WHAT
 On April 29, Fr. Donald Cahill (Curé of Ars Community, St. Louis) was inducted into the St. John Vianney High School Hall of Fame, which recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions to their profession, their community or Vianney. Fr. Don was honored as a beloved Marianist and longtime teacher at the school.
 Sr. Angela Ann Zukowski, MHSH, will receive the 2012 Catechetical Award from the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership. The award recognizes her innovative web-based learning initiatives in the areas of adult faith and catechist formation; her use of multi-media and promotion of technology; and her role in the creation of the University of Dayton Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation. Sr. Angela Ann is director of UD’s Institute for Pastoral Initiatives and a professor of religious studies.  The Marianist Archives in San Antonio hosted a special dedication at St. Mary’s University’s Fr. Louis Blume Library on April 13 in honor of Bro. Joseph Schmitz, who died in 1966. Bro. Joseph served as vice president of the university and chair of its history department and wrote several books, including “History of the Society of Mary in Texas” and “Diplomatic History of Texas.” He also founded the San Antonio Historical Association.
 Bro. Leo Willett (Marianist Residence, San Antonio) is the inspiration behind a blog post by Ryan Munoz, a student at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. Ryan visits with Bro. Leo every other week as part of the school’s “Marianist Friends” program, which fosters relationships between members of the Residence community and students. “I feel that every time I go to talk to him, I can write three blogs just on what we talked about in that hour. He is a walking piece of history. He has shared so much wisdom with me,” Ryan wrote.
 Bro. Bob Donovan (Elm Street, Cincinnati) wrote a reflection on Matthew 25:40 featured in The Church Health Reader.
   The HELP program, directed by Bro. Mike Murphy (Madison Road, Cincinnati), was featured in a television news story.

He replaces Kay Stone, who is stepping down at the end of the semester. “Danny has worked with college young people in California and Hawai’i and has a love for Christ that fits well with this transformative, spiritual mission of our campus life,” said Fr.   DANIEL J. GROSS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL, BELLEVUE, NEB., has hired John Schultz as principal, replacing Dr. Dorothy Ostrowski, who will serve as president. John comes to Gross Catholic from the Omaha public school system, where he served as a supervisor in the curriculum and learning department for the last seven years.
