On April 20, the University of Dayton dedicated and blessed a statue of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade. The statute was donated by President Daniel J. Curran and his wife Claire Renzetti as “a gift of thanksgiving for the Marianists.” Former Marianist and UD alumnus Joseph Aspell created the statue, which depicts a younger Chaminade returning to France from exile in Spain.

“He is moving, working to begin his mission. And he looks down on us to invite us to join him in this work,” said Joan McGuinness Wagner, director of Marianist strategies for UD. “The book in his arm is a symbol of the Marianist quest for knowledge through faith and reason.”

The UD sculpture is one of four throughout the Province. Smaller versions are on display in the Province office in St. Louis and at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. Another full-size sculpture will be installed at Chaminade University of Honolulu.
