PROVINCIAL CHAPTER MEETS FOR 20TH SESSION IN ST. LOUIS

The 20th session of the Provincial Chapter of the Province of the United States was held March 1-5 at the Marianist Retreat & Conference Center in Eureka, Mo.

Auxiliary Bishop Edward M. Rice of St. Louis opened the meeting with an evening prayer and a keynote address, “Challenges and Graces of Leadership.” The meeting included reports from Provincial Marty Solma, reports from the Districts of Mexico and India and the Foundation of the Philippines, and finance and budget reviews. Representatives from the Offices of Communications and Development gave presentations about their progress. Bro. Steve O’Neil discussed Marianist International, the Marianist NGO at the United Nations. Fr. George Cerniglia joined the discussion of sponsorship via video conference.

OUR LADY OF NAZARETH PRIMARY SCHOOL CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY

On Feb. 24, Our Lady of Nazareth Primary School in Nairobi, Kenya, celebrated its 20th anniversary. Special guests included Auxiliary Bishop of Nairobi David Kamau and Bro. Chola Mulenga (district superior), who toured the school’s computer lab, weather station, science lab and tree nursery. At the tour’s conclusion, they planted trees in honor of the anniversary.

The celebration included singing, poetry, theatre and presentations from the school’s karate and music clubs and an alumni dance troupe. UPDATE FROM NEPAL

Bro. Tony Nesam sends an update on Don Bosco School in Biratnagar, East Nepal, Nepal, which has an enrollment of 615 underprivileged children for the 2011-2012 academic year. Forty-five new students enrolled in this session. Four Marianist brothers minister at Don Bosco: Bro. Renny Markose (principal) and Bros. Dulare Lal Lucas, Tony Nesam and Paul Prakash.

WHO’S DOING WHAT
  Bro. William Campbell (Alexandria, Va.) has been named executive director of the Chief Administrators of Catholic Education (CACE) Department for the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). Currently Bro. Bill is associate executive director of the NCEA’s Elementary Schools Department. Congratulations, Bro. Bill!
 Fr. Quentin Hakenewerth (Puebla, Mexico) served as the inspiration for a blog post by Steve Givens, “Solitude: Quieting the world and ourselves.” Steve writes, “Many years ago, I attended a retreat given by Fr. Quentin. With one simple lesson and a flip chart showing a set of concentric circles, he taught me something I have never forgotten and which has largely shaped my approach to prayer and seeking the will of God for the past 30 years.”
 Bro. Lawrence Scrivani and Fr. Tom Thompson will serve as presenters at the Mariological Society of America’s 63rd annual program, “The Virgin Mary in the United States and Canada.” The conference will be held May 23 – 26 at the Mount Angel Abbey Retreat House in St. Benedict, Oregon.  Fr. Joe Stefanelli (Cupertino, Calif.) created this doll house for a Catholic elementary school’s silent auction. The project was inspired by Bro. Dennis Schmitz’s sister, Sr. Jolene, who saw Fr.  Michael Pinto has written a new book, “Lazarus, Come Forth.” Proceeds from the book will benefit Our Lady of Nazareth Primary School in Nairobi, Kenya. Read about Michael and his wife Susan’s involvement with OLN in this spring’s issue of ALIVE magazine (in mailboxes soon).
 On March 7, the Dayton Novitiate community celebrated Novice Norman Capinpin‘s 30th birthday with a Hawaiian themed party. Bro. Charles Johnson baked Norm’s cake and the community presented him with a handmade birthday card, which featured photos of him through the years.

THIS SUMMER, SPEND TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY AT THE SEASHORE

The Marianist Family Retreat Center in Cape May, N.J., is offering a full lineup of family programs this summer (grandparents are welcome, too). The week-long programs feature Masses and other liturgies tailored to the family complemented by skits, presentations, sharing, peer group discussions and recreational activities. Retreat themes focus on family enrichment and spiritual development through affirmation, communication, reconciliation, commitment and spreading the “Good News.” The retreats begin each Monday throughout the summer starting June 25.

UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON, OHIO. Catholic Relief Services has selected UD to pilot a new Scholars in Global Solidarity program, along with the University of San Francisco and St. John’s University in New York. “It’s one thing when you talk about solidarity in the classroom, but it’s quite different when you can give students exposure to people on the ground who are directly engaged in peacemaking or development work,” said Vince Miller, UD’s Gudorf Chair in Catholic Theology and Culture. Read more from UD. 
CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL, SAN ANTONIO, has partnered with MyClassmatesBusiness.com, an initiative created by Central Catholic alumni Michael A. Gutierrez ’90 and Abraham H. Luna, Jr. ’90. The website helps members of the CCHS community connect and do business with each other while giving back to Central Catholic. Twenty-five percent of the gross revenues generated from this online business directory will be donated to CCHS in the form of scholarship funds.

CHAMINADE COLLEGE PREPARATORY, WEST HILLS, CALIF., opened its new Tutor Family Center for the Performing Arts in February. The 23,175-square-foot building features a 365-seat theater and includes classrooms for band, drama, dance and choir.
NORTH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL, PITTSBURGH, students participated in the “Valentines for Veterans” program. During lunch periods, they created more than 100 valentines for residents of veterans’ facilities in the Pittsburgh area.
ST. JOHN VIANNEY HIGH SCHOOL, ST. LOUIS. Fr. Tim Kenney coordinated the Lenten blood drive at Vianney on March 6. More than 100 students gave blood. Combined with the Advent blood drive, Vianney has contributed 226 pints to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis in recent months.

SAINT LOUIS SCHOOL, HONOLULU. On March 2, the Ebony Heritage Singers from the University of Dayton performed for the Saint Louis School community. The group of more than 30 singers is conducted by Dr. Donna Cox.  
ST. ANTHONY JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH, MAUI, students participated in the Hawai’i state Science Olympiad competition, where they were awarded the “Spirit Trophy” for exhibiting honesty, teamwork, fairness and fun. ST. MARY’S HIGH SCHOOL, ST. LOUIS. Students in the sculpture class at St. Mary’s are creating ceramic bowls to raise money for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of St. Louis. The bowls will be sold on March 24 at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop in south St. Louis. Read an article about the project from the St. Louis Review.
