DISTRICT OF INDIA INSTALLS NEW COUNCIL ON JAN. 1 IN BANGALORE

On Jan. 1, the District of India installed a new council during a ceremony in Bangalore, India: District Superior Bro. Augustus Surin; Assistant District Superior Fr. Jack McGrath; Fr. Ignatius Arulappen, Office of Religious Life; Bro. Basant Kujur, Office of Education; Fr. Charles (Kip) Stander, Office of Temporalities; and Councilors Fr. Rajesh Kandulna and Bro. Antony Xavier. BROS. SUMAN DUNGDUNG AND RAJ MOHAN PROFESS PERPETUAL VOWS

On Dec. 31, Bro. Suman Dungdung (Jharkhand, India) and Bro. Raj Mohan (Deepahalli, India) professed perpetual vows with the Society of Mary. Fr. Pragasam Thathappa (former district superior) served as the main celebrant. Provincial Martin Solma received the vows, and Fr. David Fleming gave the homily. Many Marianist Family members attended the celebration, including the incoming and outgoing district council members and the brothers attending the Charism IV program, described in the following story. Bro. Suman is a teacher at Prabhat Tara in Singhpur, and Bro. Raj is the program director for REDS (Ragpickers Education & Development Scheme). Congratulations and best wishes to Bros. Suman and Raj!

CHARISM IV PROGRAM CONCLUDES IN BANGALORE

Charism IV program participants

Charism IV is a formation program designed for brothers from India, all units of Africa and Korea in temporary vows as they move towards a perpetual commitment. It was first introduced in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1997. The latest session, “Charism IV,” concluded Dec. 29 in Bangalore, India. During the three-week event, brothers heard presentations on theological themes, Mary, the Marianist founders, vows in community, the system of virtues and Marianists in the new millennium.

BRO. TOM GIARDINO NAMED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF AMU

Congratulations to Bro. Tom Giardino (Trinity Avenue, Dayton), who has been named executive director of the Association of Marianist Universities. The AMU is a collaborative effort of Chaminade University of Honolulu, St. Mary’s University and the University of Dayton to promote information sharing, mutual enrichment and development, and shared learning on the Marianist tradition of higher education. “We are grateful for Tom’s willingness to serve as executive director of the AMU,” said Bro. Ed Brink, Province Office of Education. “His professional experience and dedication to the Marianist tradition of education will serve the group’s mission well.” Read an article from the Dayton Daily News.

PERSONNEL UPDATES

Our prayers and congratulations to the following Marianist brothers and priests who are beginning new ministries:

Bro. Bob Wiethorn is the new director of the Mercy Siena community in Dayton, effective Jan. 1, 2012. Mercy Siena provides healthcare services for Marianist brothers and priests. Bro. Bob takes over from Fr. Tom Schroer, longtime director at Mercy Siena, who is on sabbatical.
Bro. Mike O’Grady has moved to the Marianist Residence in San Antonio in preparation for his position as director of the healthcare center, effective July 2012. For the next six months, Bro. Mike will be mentored by the current director, Bro. Lester Kaehler.
Fr. Gerry Hammel will begin a three-year service on Feb. 1 in Lusaka, Zambia, assisting with chaplaincy ministry at Matero Boys and St. Joseph Chapel as well as at the Faustino Aspirancy House.
Fr. Chris Wittmann and Bro. Charles Johnson have begun their roles as novice director and assistant novice director, respectively, at the Marianist Novitiate at Mount Saint John in Dayton. Fr. Mike Lisbeth and Bro. Mike O’Grady served in these roles previously.

Bro. Robert Wade (Cupertino, Calif.), 84, died Dec. 8, 2011, in Cupertino. His funeral took place at the Marianist Center in Cupertino on Dec. 15. Several graduates of Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, Calif., attended. Bro. Bob served at Serra High School from 1958 – 1964 and 1982 – 85. Many mourners came from Queen of Apostles Parish in San Jose, Calif., where Bro. Bob served among the original Marianists from 1985 – 1989.

ST. ALOYSIUS PARISH HOSTS MONTHLY FOOD GIVEAWAY

LEADERS OF ADELE SOCIAL JUSTICE PROJECT MEET IN DAYTON

Leaders of the Adele Social Justice Project, Cynthia Kaderli, Sr. Leanne Jablonski, Michela Buccini, Jim Vogt, Rob Brodrick and Lisa McCracken

From Nov. 18 – 20, the core team of the Adele Social Justice Project held its annual meeting in Dayton. The team developed additional outreach programs for young adults, including a day of reflection tentatively planned for Dayton in the spring. Read about the ASJP. Contact Michela Buccini.

LAY MARIANIST TO LEAD HOLY CROSS ACADEMY IN ST. LOUIS

Congratulations to Lay Marianist Amie Koenen, who has been named the first president of the new Holy Cross Academy in St. Louis. Three Catholic parish schools are merging to create Holy Cross. Amie, who served as a campus minister at St. Mary’s High School in St. Louis for 10 years, said her time as a Lay Marianist and educator will serve her well in her new role.

“I loved the family spirit at St. Mary’s; it’s something we want to create at Holy Cross,” Amie said. “Building community will be essential as these schools come together.”

 On Dec. 13, Bro. Al Kuntemeier (Nolan Marianist Community, Fort Worth, Texas) received the papal honor, The Pro-Ecclesia et Pontifice Cross. The honor was bestowed by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI and conferred by Bishop Kevin W. Vann (Diocese of Fort Worth). The ceremony was held at St. Patrick Cathedral in Fort Worth.

  Congratulations to Fr. D’Cruz Nicholas (District of India), who earned a master’s degree  in science in education and allied professions. Fr. D’Cruz resides at the Marianist Novitiate in Dayton.

 Bro. Mike Murphy (DeSales Crossings, Cincinnati) was profiled in a recent article about the Help Program. The program, the brainchild of Bro. Mike, teaches job and life skills to Cincinnati homeless men. The article also mentions Fr. Gene Contadino, pastor at St. Francis de Sales, where the program is now located.  The scripture class led by Bro. Frank Gomes (Makawao, Hawai’i), center, wearing lei, graduated on Dec. 11 during Mass at St. Joseph Church in Makawao.

CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY OF HONOLULU celebrated the first endowment gift to its Interior Design program with the announcement of a $150,000 donation from the chair of Chaminade’s Board of Regents Kathleen “Kitty” (Sullivan) Wo and her husband, Ronald C. “Buzz” Wo.
