2,500 MILES OF OCEAN, ONE MARIANIST CHARISM
On Dec. 10, Chaminade University of Honolulu conferred degrees on the first 14 graduates of the Caroline College and Pastoral Institute (CCPI), located 2,500 miles from Honolulu in Chuuk, Micronesia. Launched in September 2010 as a CUH outreach, CCPI credits several factors for its success: the vision of the Most Rev. Amando Samo, bishop of the Diocese of the Caroline Islands and CUH ’73, Chuukese parishes in Hawai’i, Guam, and the mainland; and CUH.
One week later, on Dec. 17, more than 250 CUH graduates received their degrees at the school’s fall commencement ceremony in Honolulu. CUH conferred an honorary doctorate on Bishop Samo for his role in helping to establish CCPI. The Most Reverend Clarence “Larry” Silva, bishop of the Diocese of Honolulu, gave the invocation.

Emmanuel Parish, the first Catholic church in Dayton, is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year. “Throughout the history of the parish, the Society of Mary (Marianists) has had a profound influence upon the parishioners, especially in fostering a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1956, Archbishop Karl J. Alter asked the Marianists to assume the pastoral care and administration of the parish, a mission they faithfully fulfilled until 2010. At that time, the decision was made, in dialogue with the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, to turn the care of the parish over to the Missionaries of the Precious Blood.” Read more from The Catholic Telegraph.
FEBRUARY FEAST DAYS
|Feb. 2 is the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. “This feast commemorates Mary’s purification and the presentation of Jesus in the temple. In the Middle Ages, a tradition began of blessing candles and holding a procession of light on this day. As a result it is also known as ‘Candlemas’— Christ our light has come to us. We also remember the first members of the Bordeaux Sodality who made their first act of consecration on Feb. 2, 1801.” Read a list of February feast days|
