FOUR MARIANIST JUBILARIANS HONORED IN HAWAI’I

Marianist jubilarians Bro. Jerry Bommer (60 years), Fr. Roland Bunda (50 years), Bro. Robert Maruyama (50 years) and Bro. Thomas Spring (60 years) were honored at a Mass on Sept. 2 at the Mystical Rose Oratory on the campus of Chaminade University of Honolulu. Frs. George Cerniglia, Paul Marshall and Roland concelebrated the Mass; Fr. Paul delivered the homily. A reception followed at the Ching Conference Center. Congratulations to these brothers, and thank you for your years of service to the Marianist Family!

PROVINCIAL CHAPTER MEETS AT BERGAMO RETREAT CENTER

From Sept. 6 – 9, the Provincial Chapter gathered at the Bergamo Retreat Center in Dayton. Members reviewed the Spiritual Renewal process in the Province, the implementation of Vision 2020, vocation ministry and the Province’s compliance with the new standards from Praesidium Religious Services. The centerpiece of the Chapter was a presentation from the Sponsorship Task Force, led by Fr. George Cerniglia (chair), Bro. Ed Brink and Tony Fitzgerald (facilitator).

The members of the Chapter joined the Marianist Sisters on the evening of Sept. 8 for the jubilee celebration of Sr. Mary Louise Foley and Sr. Marie AbmayrFr. Chris Wittmann served as celebrant and homilist.

MARIANIST SISTERS INSTALL NEW COUNCIL, CELEBRATE JUBILEES

The Marianist Sisters of the U.S. Province installed a new Provincial Council during morning prayer with the San Antonio community on Sept. 15. Sr. Evangeline Escobar was installed as provincial, Sr. Laura Leming as assistant for religious life, and Sr. Estella Ibarra as assistant for temporalities. The council members will share the concerns of the Office of Education. Sr. Gretchen Trautman, general assistant for temporalities, received the council’s commitments. Sr. Gretchen represented Superior General Franca Zonta. Congratulations and blessings to these sisters in their leadership roles.

Srs. Mary Louise Foley (50 years) and Marie Abmayr (60 years) were honored on Sept. 8 at a Mass at the Immaculate Conception Chapel on the campus of the University of Dayton. About 200 guests joined in the celebration. A reception followed in UD’s Kennedy Union.

HEALTHCARE DIRECTORS GATHER IN ST. LOUIS

Representatives from the communities that provide comprehensive healthcare to elderly and infirm brothers met in St. Louis on Sept. 13. Bro. Jim Vorndran, a former healthcare director and a nurse by training, joined the meeting. Participants discussed the role of stress in aging, integrating spiritual vitality into communities, and the communities’ ongoing assessment by the National Religious Retirement Office.

Read an excerpt from ALIVE magazine about the 11-foot bronze statue of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade installed this spring on the campus of the University of Dayton. “The statue is a concrete way to remind us of our mission and identity,” says Fr. MARIANIST LIFE HOSTS SUCCESSFUL SUMMER PROGRAMS

Marianist LIFE (Living In Faith Experience) hosted its annual trio of regional summer programs in June and July. Marianist LIFE Pacific (Occidental, Calif.), Marianist LIFE Central (Dayton) and Marianist LIFE South (Mountain Home, Texas) welcomed participants from across the continental United States, Hawai’i and Puerto Rico for workshops and experiences in leadership development, prayer, the sacraments, community building and social justice.

A total of 195 high school students, 92 adults and 30 schools and parishes participated. Upon returning to their schools and parishes after the summer program, participants invite others to share in their LIFE by building and sustaining Marianist LIFE Communities (MLCs) and supporting other ministries and activities.

ST. ALOYSIUS CELEBRATES SCHOOL BLESSING, JUBILEE

On Sunday, Sept 16, St. Aloysius Parish in Cleveland celebrated the School Blessing Mass to mark the beginning of the school year. During the Mass, Sr. Sandra Sabo celebrated her 50th jubilee. Sr. Sandra has served St. Aloysius-St. Agatha School for 42 years and has been the principal for 30 years. Bishop Roger Gries, auxiliary bishop of Cleveland, was the celebrant. At the Mass, children from the school brought up gifts at the offertory procession.

MARIANIST WORLD DAY OF PRAYER: OCT. 14

Sunday, Oct. 14 is the Marianist World Day of Prayer. Marianist Family members from around the world will gather at the Shrine of Mary, Mother of All Mercies, in Togo. During the gathering, they will honor the first three Marianist missionaries to arrive in Togo 50 years ago: Bro. Auguste Augustin, Fr. Stephan Hoin and Bro. Pierre Cattin. WHO’S DOING WHAT
 Bro. Tom Giardino’s term as executive director of the Association of Marianist Universities has been extended for three years. Congratulations, Bro. Tom, and best wishes as you continue this ministry.
 Fr. Neville O’Donohue was profiled in the Sept. 15 issue of Maryland’s Carroll County Times. He was appointed pastor of  St. Joseph Catholic Community in Eldersburg, Md., on Aug. 1.  

 St. Mary’s University graduate Benita Veliz delivered a speech at the Democratic National Convention. Benita was brought to the United States as a child by her parents but nearly deported in 2009 after a minor traffic violation. In her speech, she discussed the DREAM (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) Act. St. Mary’s Law School Clinic is assisting eligible individuals with their applications. Watch a clip of Benita’s speech.

CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY OF HONOLULU. Chaminade University will receive $2 million from the U.S. Department of Education for the 2012 -2013 fiscal year to help improve access to higher education for low-income students. “This grant will allow us to address some of the most pressing of our remaining deferred maintenance issues and greatly enhance the opportunities available to our pre-health and nursing students,” said Bro. Bernard Ploeger, president. The major portion of the funding will be used for the renovation of Tredtin Hall and Hale Lokelani.  
CHAMINADE COLLEGE PREPARATORY, WEST HILLS, CALIF. Chaminade senior and basketball player Jaron Martin received the Farmers Student Athlete Citizen Award on Sept. 14. Presented by Farmers and Fox Sports West, the award honored Martin for excellence in education, athletics and community involvement. Watch the award presentation, which aired on Fox Sports West.
NOLAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL, FORT WORTH, TEXAS. Following Nolan’s campus-wide liturgy of the Mass of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in August, Fort Worth Bishop Kevin Vann blessed the school’s new Our Lady of Victory Student Prayer Garden, one of the two projects commissioned last year in recognition of Nolan’s 50th anniversary.
Nolan Catholic students began their school year with a campaign to collect insect repellant for area homeless and others vulnerable to West Nile virus. They collected more than 350 cans of repellant, which were delivered to Catholic Charities Fort Worth’s Street Outreach Services team to distribute to the unsheltered homeless population of Fort Worth. ST. JOHN VIANNEY HIGH SCHOOL, ST. LOUIS. About 800 Vianney students and their grandparents gathered Sept. 9 for a celebration of faith and family. The Mass was celebrated by Vianney Chaplain Fr. Tim Kenney. Students also enjoyed lunch with their grandparents and gave them tours of the school.

VILLA ANGELA-ST. JOSEPH HIGH SCHOOL, CLEVELAND, held its opening Mass celebrated by the Most Reverend Richard G. Lennon on Sept. 6. The school also announced the creation of the Nicholas Valentino Scholarship in memory of 1964 St. Joseph graduate Nick Valentino, who passed away in 2010. The scholarship is made possible by a 10-year $100,000 pledge from Nick’s longtime friend, Mark Haskell of Sedona, Arizona.
